Design a pattern.
See the fabric.
Knit it for real.

superknit is a studio for machine knitting that runs in your browser. Chart stitch by stitch or import an image at your gauge, preview how the fabric will actually look, check your floats, then send the pattern straight to your AYAB-equipped Brother over Web Serial.

01What it does

Everything between an idea and a finished panel

Charting, colour reduction, fabric preview and the machine link all live in one place, so a pattern never has to be exported, converted and re-imported to get onto the bed.

A designer built for needles, not pixels

A crisp canvas grid with pencil, line, rectangle, bucket, eyedropper and selection. Needle numbers run from the centre out, exactly the way the machine counts them, and rows are numbered up the side.

Image import that knows your gauge

Give it a size in centimetres and it works out the needles and rows. Colours are reduced with median cut, and dithering stays off by default because flat colour knits cleaner.

Text and pixel fonts

A built-in 5 by 7 stitch font sets names, dates and numbers without a single blurred edge.

Scarf and garment templates

Say 25 cm wide and 180 cm long. superknit turns that into 75 needles and 756 rows at your swatch gauge.

Knit-look preview

Flip from chart to fabric. Each stitch is drawn as a V at the real gauge ratio, so you see the squashed proportions before you cast on.

Float analysis

Every row is checked for yarn carried too far behind the fabric, with the worst offenders listed so you can fix them before they snag.

Knit straight from the browser

Web Serial talks to your AYAB board directly. Single bed, classic ribber, middle colours twice, heart of Pluto and circular ribber, with live carriage position.

Motor automationIn development

The next step: a motor drives the carriage and an automatic changer swaps colours, so a long piece runs without a hand on the handle.

02How it works

Three steps, one browser tab

No desktop install, no file shuffling between a drawing program and a pattern converter.

  1. 01

    Chart it or import it

Draw on the needle grid, drop in a PNG, or set a size in centimetres and let your gauge decide the stitch count. Palettes cap at six colours because that is what the machine can carry.

pencil · bucket · line · rectangle · image import

  2. 02

Check it before you cast on

Switch to the knit-look preview to see the real stitch proportions, run the float check, and repeat or mirror the motif until the panel reads the way you want it.

knit look · float analysis · tile · mirror · rotate

  3. 03

    Send it to the machine

Connect the AYAB board over Web Serial, pick your mode and needle range, and knit. superknit feeds each line as the carriage asks for it and shows you where you are.

web serial · 5 modes · live carriage position

03Compatibility

Works with the AYAB you already have

superknit speaks the same protocol as ayab-desktop and exports PNGs in the same convention, so nothing about your existing setup has to change.

What you need

  • An AYAB shield and the AYAB firmware on the machine
  • A Chromium browser with Web Serial: Chrome, Edge, Opera or Arc
  • A USB cable between the board and the computer
  • Nothing installed on the computer itself

Safari and Firefox do not ship Web Serial. You can still design and export a PNG there, then knit it from a Chromium browser or from ayab-desktop.

The things people ask first

Still stuck on something? Write to hello@superknit.app and a human who owns a knitting machine will answer.

Early access

Be there when the carriage moves on its own

We send one message when the machine link opens up, and one more when motor automation is ready to test. Nothing else, and you can leave at any time.
